How to Choose the Right duvet for You
At Scotts of Stow we offer a wide range of bedding including a variety of duvets. To help you make the right choice and ensure you receive the duvet that's perfect for you, we've put together this guide to give you all the information you'll need.
There are three main things you need to think about when choosing a duvet:
- Warmth (tog rating)
Tog ratings the warmth indicator
Duvets keep you warm by trapping warm air, and some have better thermal qualities than others. To make it easy to compare duvets, every duvet has a tog rating, which shows how warm it is. The higher the tog rating the warmer the duvet. Typical tog ratings are as follows:
|Tog-rating||Weight and warmth||Suitable for|
|3.0 - 4.5||Light weight and cool||Warm summer nights|
|7.0 - 10.5||Medium weight and warm||Temperate spring and autumn nights|
|12 - 13.5||Medium weight but very warm and cosy||Chilly winter and autumn nights|
All-season duvets come as a set of two duvets with two different tog ratings. These can be used singly on hot nights or clipped together to give a higher tog rating for cooler nights.
About Duvet Fillings
There are two main types of filling for duvets natural fillings and synthetic fillings.
Natural fillings feel sumptuously soft, warm and comfortable. They tend to last longer than synthetic fillings as they bounce back after washing or being sat on, so they keep their cloud-like softness for longer. Natural fillings are generally more expensive and considered more luxurious.
Synthetic fillings offer just as much warmth, but feel lighter. Synthetic filling duvets are a good choice if you suffer from allergies as they are easier to launder and dry more quickly. However, this type of filling can become compressed over time, which reduces its airiness and warmth.
|NATURAL DUVET FILLINGS||SYNTHETIC DUVET FILLINGS|
|Goosedown - The most luxurious filling, which makes duvets feel very light and cosy, yet also extremely warm. Softer and lighter in weight than duckdown, goosedown is combed from a layer underneath the exterior feathers of the goose.
Feathers - Some duvets are filled with a combination of down and feathers. They are more hardwearing and more economical. Because feathers are not as warm as down more are needed to get the same tog rating, so a feather or feather and down duvet can feel heavier.
Ingeo - A farm-grown bio-fibre, first introduced in 2003, which feels wonderfully lightweight and cool. Dubbed 'the fibre of the future' it is renewable, recyclable and sustainable. Unlike polyester fillings, it is completely free from any petroleum-based products, so is completely non-allergenic.
|Microfibre - These are the 21st century miracle fibres used in high-performance ski-wear for warmth without weight. Created by a spinning process that's a little like making candyfloss, spun microfibers feel similar to a goosedown duvet but are naturally non-allergenic.
Hollowfibre - These superfine fibres have a microscopic hollow centre, which creates millions of minute air pockets to trap warmth. The structure of the fibres makes them light yet very strong, which gives hollowfibre filled duvets a good loft.
Comforel - A patented, hiqh-quality filling made of millions of tiny clusters of fibre. Thanks to a unique structure, Comforel© not only feels like down, but it also re-fluffs after washing. Completely anti-bacterial it is ideal for allergy sufferers.
Your Bed Size
It's worth measuring your bed with a tape measure before you buy to make sure you get the right size. You may want to consider buying a duvet that's larger than the bed as it gives it a more sumptuous look for daytime, and at night, a more generously-sized duvet is easier to share with a partner.
Typical sizes are shown below (may differ depending on style):
|Mattress size (cm)||Mattress Size (inches)||Duvet size (cm)||Duvet Size (inches)|
