How to Choose the Perfect Pillow

Here at Scotts of Stow we stock a wide range of pillows to suit every sleeping position and preference, from the indulgent luxury of natural Hungarian Goose Down Pillows to great value Anti-allergy Hollowfibre Pillows.
There are three main factors to take into account when choosing a pillow:
- The position in which you sleep at night
- The softness OR firmness of the pillow filling

About Pillow Fillings
Down Pillows - The most luxurious filling, extremely soft, light and comfortable with excellent insulation properties. Down comes from birds such as goose or duck, and is found in a layer underneath the exterior feathers.
Mixed Down Pillows - Because pure down is so soft it is often mixed with other fillings to give the pillow more loft and bounce.
Feather Pillows - A soft, natural filling that has more natural bounce so makes a firmer pillow with more loft and substance. The most common type of feather used is duck.
Cluster Fibre Pillows - A high quality synthetic filling, the fibres are clustered into balls which gives comfortable medium support. Extremely resilient, this premium filling always bounces back.
Hollow Fibre Pillows - A traditional and good value synthetic filling which gives soft support.
Memory Foam Pillows - An advanced filling which moulds to your shape to relieve pressure and support your back neck and shoulders in the correct anatomical position. Some memory foam pillows come with a washable Coolmax® cover which helps regulate temperature to keep you extra cool and comfortable.
Pocket Sprung Pillows - A specialist pillow containing pocketed stainless steel springs encased in a synthetic filling to keep your spine and neck aligned while you sleep.
Latex Pillows - A luxury, high density foam that cradles your head and always keeps its shape for superior comfort and support.
Do you sometimes find you can't get comfortable in bed, no matter what type of pillow you have? It may be time to think about a specialist pillow. Here are some common problems, and the pillow that may be the solution for you.
When you want to stop snoring
The unique shape of the patented Side Sleeper Pillow supports your upper body in such a way that it reduces spinal twisting which opens up the nasal passages to help prevent snoring.
When you feel hot in summer and cold in winter
Our All-seasons Reversible Pillow has velvety plush microfibre on one side which is cosy and warm for winter nights when the temperature drops. As the nights get shorter and the mercury rises, simply turn over the pillow to the plain microfibre side which feels much cooler.
When you feel strain or pressure on your knees, hips or lower back
Twice as long as an ordinary pillow, the Huggable Body Pillow gently supports your arm and lower leg as you sleep, to reduce pressure on your spine and joints. The patented SideSleeper Pillow was designed by a chiropractor to help stop your head and neck tilting forwards which helps avoid pressure and twisting on your spine. It also has a dip for your ear for extra comfort and coolness.
When you often overheat in bed
When you long to rest your head on something cool, a Chill Pillow Pad gives instant relief without needing any refrigeration. Designed to rest on your normal pillow underneath the pillowcase, the cool pad is filled with a technologically advanced gel that's always cooler than normal body temperature, so it feels pleasantly cool but not chilly.
When lying down puts stress on your joints or sensitive knees
Placed between your knees, our supportive Memory Foam Thigh Pillow stops your knees rubbing together at night. By supporting your knees it helps to keep your legs aligned which relieves a great deal of pressure on your hips and leg joints. A Velcro strap keeps it in place all night long.
When you feel uncomfortable sitting up in bed
Ordinary pillows are designed for sleeping on, not to prop you up. Lumbar Support Pillows are shaped to cradle your lower back, give you complete support and encourage correct posture. V-shaped Pillows support your neck and shoulders, without putting pressure on your back. Both types can be more comfortable when you have back pain and can be used on a chair or sofa as well as in bed.
